We recommend you pack something to drink and at least a small emergency food supply.

Many night trains have restaurant or bistro coaches where you can buy a meal, snacks, and drinks. However, these are not always open, and the food is more expensive than in the supermarket. Find out in advance on the railway operator's website or app.

A basic catering service is often included in sleeper and couchette carriages. This usually includes breakfast and drinks such as water, coffee or tea (often approx. 0.5 litres). Sometimes, you also get small snacks. If you are travelling in a seating coach, no food and drink is usually included.

The water from the tap is not for drinking!

There is no facility for cooling or heating food, so take food that lasts well and is easy to prepare. If you want to avoid eating the standard bread or oatmeal, you can find a collection of snack ideas for travelling here.

If you have special dietary requirements, bringing your own food is best.
