On nightride.com, there are three cabin categories: sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars. The service level for each cabin category varies depending on the operator.

To make it easier for you to compare, we use standardised cabin categories for all operators on nightride.com.

In the following overview, you can see which nightride.com categories correspond to the respective operator categories. You can also see the service levels for each operator's categories.

The Trenitalia logo

All Intercity Notte night trains have sleeping cars (Vagone Letto Relax / Superior) and couchette cars (Cucetta Comfort). On most routes, seating cars (Posto a sedere - EASY) are also available.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin, optional WC/shower, towel, travel kit, bottles of water, daily newspaper, and breakfast. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Service level: Comfortable armchair, reservation included, and fold-down tables at your seat. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

ÖBB

The ÖBB logo

With its Nightjet (NJ) connections, ÖBB operates a large fleet of different night trains. The night trains run with sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars.

There are 'old' Nightjets and 'Nightjets of the new generation', which have different offerings. The Nightjet of the new generation is also advertised with the keyword 'comfort'.

The Nightjet of the new generation also features Mini Cabins. A Mini Cabin is similar in comfort to a couchette. However, you can separate it from fellow travellers for more privacy. It's similar to a space in a Japanese capsule hotel.

The compartments on partner railways, with which ÖBB operates the so-called Euronight (EN) trains, may have slightly different names and features.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin, optional WC & shower, optional table, towel, travel kit, bottle of water, à la carte breakfast, wake-up service, and power sockets. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Sleeper cabins are usually occupied by people of the same gender.

Service level: Blankets and sheets to make your own bed, washrooms and toilets in the car, towel, travel kit, bottle of water, breakfast (two rolls, jam, butter, coffee or tea), wake-up service, and power sockets. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Couchettes are divided into 4-person, 5-person, 6-person, and modernised 4-person compartments. The latter are found on the Nightjet of the new generation and sometimes on older vehicles, and are labelled 'comfort' on nightjet.com.

The compartments can also be booked as private compartments and women-only, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these options are labelled 'women-only'.

The Deutsche Bahn logo

The night trains of Deutsche Bahn have seating cars.

Night train: Seats

Service level 2nd class: Seat pitch 86 to 97cm, legroom at least 80cm, table depending on the seat, power sockets, and on-board restaurant depending on the connection.

Service level 1st class: Seat pitch 93 to 102cm, legroom at least 88cm, Wi-Fi (depending on the connection), reading light, on-board restaurant depending on the connection, and access to the DB Lounge in stations with a Flexpreis ticket.

Regiojet

The Regiojet logo

Regiojet operates night trains and night buses. The night trains have couchette cars and seating cars. The night buses have different seat categories.

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: bed linen, Wi-Fi, breakfast, coffee, bottle of water, daily newspapers, entertainment portal, and a wake-up service. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

You'll share the compartment with other travellers if you're travelling alone (or if, for example, two of you book a 3-person compartment). If your group size fits the booked compartment, you'll usually have it for your private use. This is also how it's indicated on nightride.com. You can also book a compartment for your private use.

The compartments can also be booked as women-only, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, these options are labelled 'women-only'.

Passengers with reduced mobility receive assistance. To request this service, select the fare for people with reduced mobility when booking.

Night train: Seats

Service in all categories: Reservation included, bottles of water, and newspapers. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Depending on the route, you can choose from the following seat categories on Regiojet night trains:

  • Low Cost: Non-reclining seats, Wi-Fi, bottle of water.
  • Standard: Reclining seats, 6-person compartments, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, other drinks, and free parking at the station.
  • Relax: Reclining seats, max. 6-person compartments, tables, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, drinks, and free parking at the station.
  • Business: Reclining seats, max. 4-person compartments, private table, Wi-Fi, power sockets, coffee, drinks, and free parking at the station.

Depending on the route, you can choose from the following seat categories on Regiojet night buses. All seats come with a seat reservation:

  • Standard: Reclining seats, tables, WC, Wi-Fi, (USB) power sockets, and snacks and refreshments available for purchase.
  • Relax: Extra comfortable seats, more legroom, tables, individual entertainment screens, WC, Wi-Fi, power sockets, free hot drinks, and newspapers on some routes. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

European Sleeper

The night trains from European Sleeper have sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars.

Service level: Made-up couchette with duvet, pillow and sheet, toilets and washing facilities in the car, wake-up service on request, mineral water included, breakfast can be added as an option, and other snacks & drinks are available from the train crew.

You'll share the compartment with other travellers. You can also book a compartment for your private use. Unlike the 6-person compartment, the 5-person compartment has air conditioning.

The 5-person compartments can also be booked as women-only, as they are usually mixed-gender. On nightride.com, the compartments are labelled 'women-only'.

Additionally, there are couchette compartments under the name Comfort Standard, which can be occupied by a maximum of three people. These are also equipped with a proper mattress that is placed on the couchette.

SNCF

The SNCF logo

The night trains of the French rail operator SNCF are called Intercités de Nuit. They run with couchette cars and seating cars.

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: Couchette with pillow and a thin sleeping bag (replaces sheet and blanket), toilets and washing facilities in the car, 1 bottle of mineral water, sleep mask and earplugs, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and a shower at the arrival station (depending on the station).

Caledonian Sleeper

The Caledonian Sleeper connects London daily (except Saturdays) with five Scottish destinations: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, and Fort William. There are sleeping cars and seating cars. Couchette cars are not common on British night trains. All sleeper cabins are always booked for private use – you don't share them with strangers.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level Classic Room: made-up beds (two bunk beds), washbasin, Wi-Fi, USB sockets, key card, and breakfast for an extra charge. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Service level Club Room: same as Classic Room, plus an en-suite bathroom with WC and shower, breakfast included, access to the station lounge, and priority access to the dining car.

Service level Caledonian Double: same as Club Room, but with a wide double bed (140 cm) instead of bunk beds.

SJ

The Swedish state railway, SJ, operates the SJ EuroNight from Berlin to Stockholm (via Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Malmö) as well as several night trains within Sweden (including Malmö–Stockholm, Stockholm–Umeå, and Stockholm–Luleå). The trains have sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars. On the Stockholm–Umeå and Stockholm–Luleå routes, there are also Deluxe compartments with a private WC and shower.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin in the compartment, and towels. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

Service level Deluxe: as above, plus a WC and shower in the compartment. Available on selected routes.

Snälltåget

Snälltåget operates night trains between European cities, including Berlin–Stockholm (via Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Malmö) and other seasonal routes. The trains have couchette cars and seating cars – no sleeping cars.

Night train: Couchette car

Service level: Pillow, pillowcase, sheet, and duvet included (you make your own bed). Toilets and washing facilities in the car. Breakfast can be added as an option. Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.

The compartments have three berths on each side with ladders to the upper berths. During the day, they are configured as a seating compartment and are converted to sleeping mode for the night.

Twiliner

The Twiliner logo

Twiliner is the first bus company in Europe where you can travel and sleep lying down. Your seat transforms into a completely flat bed at the touch of a button.

All reclining seats come with a sheet, pillow, and blanket. You can eat and work at a small table. You have personal storage space, a reading light, and a USB-C port to charge your electronic devices. You have free Wi-Fi during the journey.

BTE Autoreisezug

BTE offers a motorail train from Hamburg to Lörrach (on the border with Switzerland). In addition to vehicle transport, the train also offers couchette and sleeping cars.

Washrooms and WCs are located in the car. Breakfast is included in all available categories. Snacks and drinks are also available for purchase in the evening.

Night train: Sleeping car

Unlike the couchette cars, the sleeping cars have air conditioning. They can only be booked privately, meaning you always book the entire compartment for a maximum of three people.

RDC

RDC Germany operates the RDC Euronight night train three times a week between Berlin and Stockholm, with stops in Hamburg, Copenhagen, and several Swedish cities. The night trains have sleeping cars, couchette cars, and seating cars.

Night train: Sleeping car

Service level: made-up beds, washbasin in the compartment, toilets in the corridor, and breakfast included (delivered to your compartment). Snacks and refreshments are available for purchase.
