Does Deutsche Bahn still operate night trains?

Deutsche Bahn (DB) exited the actual night train business in 2016. However, it operates around a dozen Intercity and Eurocity trains that run exclusively at night.

What are the travel conditions like on these trains?

These trains only have first and second class seats. The cars remain lit throughout the night and the seats cannot be reclined.

Snälltåget

Snälltåget offers night travel with various comfort levels on night trains between European cities.

What accommodation options are available?

Accommodation ranges from individual seats in coaches to shared compartments with up to six berths and private compartments for small groups. All beds include bedding and blankets.

How do the compartments work?

In shared and private compartments, seats convert to berths at night. Each compartment features three berths on each side with ladders to reach the upper berths. Private compartments are ideal for groups seeking more privacy.

Are pets and bicycles allowed?

Animals are permitted in private compartments only. Bikes are not allowed, but collapsible bicycles can be transported as hand luggage or stored on luggage racks.

SJ

The Swedish Railway SJ operates night trains daily throughout Sweden, covering long distances and serving remote areas.

What types of cars are available on SJ night trains?

SJ night trains offer seats, couchettes, and sleeper cars. The sleeper cars feature various compartment types: for two or three people and single compartments. On some routes, Deluxe compartments with private bathroom and shower are also available.

What amenities do the sleeper cars offer?

All sleeper compartments at SJ are equipped with a washbasin. The Deluxe compartments additionally offer a private bathroom with shower.

What is included in the couchette compartments?

Couchette compartments accommodate up to six people. Bedding is provided including pillow, pillowcase, sheets and blanket. During the day, middle berths are folded up so lower berths can be used as sofas. You can choose between women-only, men-only, or mixed compartments. SJ offers limited couchette compartments where pets are allowed, and these must be booked as private compartments.

ÖBB

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) operate the Nightjet and Euronight trains (the latter together with other national railway agencies).

What types of carriages are available on ÖBB trains?

ÖBB night trains typically feature four types of carriages: seats, couchettes, the compact Mini Cabin, and sleepers.

What's the difference between seats, couchettes, Mini Cabins, and sleeper cars?

While seats are only for the bravest, couchettes, Mini Cabins, and sleepers offer a more comfortable journey. The couchettes usually feature simple and rather narrow berths, while the Mini Cabin provides a compact private space for one person. Two adjacent Mini Cabins can be combined for couples. Sleepers boast beds with duvets and pillows and sometimes even a private bathroom. Couchettes accommodate up to six people, Mini Cabins are designed for one person each but two can be combined for couples, while sleepers are private compartments for one to three people.

What amenities do sleeper cars offer?

Sleepers sometimes include a private bathroom or even a shower, sometimes only a sink. The Mini Cabin offers a more affordable private alternative with its own compact sleeping space for one person.

RDC

The Hamburg-based railway company RDC Deutschland runs the RDC Euronight between Berlin and Stockholm. The train departs Berlin in the evening and arrives in Stockholm the next morning after approximately 15 hours.

What sleeping car options are available?

The train offers two sleeping car categories. In the 1st class sleeper, private compartments accommodate up to three people with wide, made-up beds, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, and breakfast served directly to the compartment. The 2nd class sleeper has two-person compartments with a washbasin and 230V socket in the compartment; the toilet is in the corridor. 2nd class sleeper compartments can be booked privately or shared — in mixed or women-only configuration.

What does the couchette car offer?

Couchette compartments accommodate up to six people and can be booked privately or as individual berths. All berths come with a pillow, sheet, and blanket. Washrooms and toilets are available in the carriage.

What does the seating car offer?

The seating car is the most affordable option, offering compartments for up to six people as well as open-plan carriages. Power sockets are available at every seat and a seat reservation is included in the ticket price. Toilets are located in the vestibules at the end of the car.

Is breakfast included?

Passengers in sleeping car compartments — both 1st and 2nd class — receive breakfast delivered to their compartment. Couchette and seating car passengers are not provided with breakfast.
